A Geneva cross on the intermittent sprocket's shaft makes a quarter turn: four perforations, one frame. It turns only while the driver's pin is in a slot, 90° of the driver's turn. For the other 270° the cross is locked and the frame sits still in the 0.825 × 0.602 in aperture. The shutter turns once a frame. One blade covers every pull-down and the others cut the still frame. So two blades flash each frame twice: 48 Hz at 24 fps. The loops above and below the gate take up the difference between the steady sprockets and the stepping one.
